Natural Stone Driveways: The Complete Guide for UK Homeowners

A natural stone driveway adds lasting kerb appeal to any home — and when properly installed, will outlast concrete, block paving and tarmac by decades. Here’s everything you need to know before starting your project.

    Do You Need Planning Permission?

In the UK, you don’t need planning permission for a driveway if it’s laid with a permeable surface — or if surface water is directed to a lawn or border. The key requirement since 2008: driveways over 5m² that drain onto the public highway require a permeable surface or planning permission.

Natural stone can be laid with permeable jointing to comply with these regulations.

    Best Natural Stone for Driveways

    Indian Sandstone — Driveway Grade

DNS Stones offers specific driveway grade sandstone — thicker, harder slabs rated for vehicle loading. Available in Kandla Grey, Raj Green and Autumn Brown formats.

    Cobbles

Natural cobbles (setts) are traditional, extremely durable and look stunning on period properties. Our Kandla Grey, Fossil Buff and Silver Grey Granite cobbles are popular driveway choices.

    Block Paving

Natural stone block paving — in sandstone, limestone or granite — provides exceptional durability for vehicle loading areas. Our Silver Grey Granite Block Paving is one of our most requested driveway products.

    Base Preparation Is Everything

The base of a natural stone driveway is more important than the stone itself. A poorly prepared sub-base will cause slabs to sink, crack and become a trip hazard regardless of stone quality.

    Minimum specification for a driveway:

    • 150mm compacted Type 1 sub-base
    • Full mortar bed (NOT spot bedding for driveways)
    • Flexible jointing compound or resin
    • Correct drainage to comply with planning regulations

    Maintenance

A well-installed, sealed natural stone driveway needs very little maintenance — an annual wash and re-seal every 2–3 years keeps it looking excellent. Far less work than block paving which requires weed control and re-sanding.
